Online Safety Institute

The Online Safety Institute (OSI) was established as non-governmental not for profit working association in December 2006. It was one of the outcomes of the CzeSI project (CZEch Safer Internet awareness node) - the first Czech project supported by the European Commission in the frame of the Safer Internet program. The mission of the Institute is to establish a coordination centre of studies and popularisation of safer Internet issues. Important objective is to ensure sustainability of the Saferinternet.cz project in case the EC funding of the project will be reduced or stopped.

The main objective of the Institute is to support research and studies of the safer Internet issues, to create a documentation centre and repository of the best practises and to contribute a methodological way to efforts increasing safer use of the Internet.

A vital task of the OSI is to increase awareness about advantages but also threats o the Internet and new media, contribute to definition and adoption ethical norms in electronic communication, carry implementation and keeping codes of conduct and contribute different ways to reduction of possible social risks related to exploitation of information and communication technologies. Struggle against online crime, first of all against distribution of child porn, cyberbullying, grooming, stalking racism, xenophobia, and extremism belong to significant tasks of the Institute.

Activity of the Institute is focusing on support of efficient from of cooperation between public administration, industry, educational institutions, public libraries, NGOs.

Among the project carried out by the Institute are conferences, workshops, dissemination campaigns, analyses and publications. The Institute is preparing a launch of the new web site Bezpecnejionline.cz (Saferonline.cz) as the main communication channel of the safer internet issues in the Czech Republic.

The OSI successfully launched the CEE SIC 2007 conference together with the CZESICON project. The conference was supported by the EC, INHOPE and INSAFE networks.

To carry out the above described tasks, the SIIN is taking advantage of sponsorships, national and international grants, and different programs of Trans-European and international cooperation.
